I'm Not Sure

So, when I started decorating Jill's nursery, I knew that I would be incorporating some hoop art onto the walls. There are so many cute embroidery hoop ideas out there, and who doesn't like inexpensive decorating? I planned on making just a few plain hoops with some favorite fabrics, but then I got another idea...

I had been looking up felt flower tutorials to see if I could get on board with the whole Headband/Flower-Stuck-to-Baby-Head style, and I decided to try to make a few. I love working with felt and made quite the collection of felt food for the kids a few years ago, so I was excited to get started. After making a few, I couldn't really see me putting some of those big flowers on my little girl's head, so I put them on some linen instead. Only now, I can't really decide if it is really cool or...not. You know how sometimes you are just too close to a project to really see it?

The yellow dahlia-ish flower was the first one I tried. I don't really love it, but it was good practice to get back into hand sewing. I was going for the "ombre" effect, but I think I would like it better if it were all the same color.

I'm not really finished with this one, but I also can't decide if I should keep going. What do you think? Felt flowers as wall art....yay or nay?

On a side note, Blogger says this is my 200th post. Since I totally skipped over the 1-year mark of this little blog, should we celebrate? Perhaps a little giveaway soon?

Update 2.0.....Here are some felt flower tutorials that I either used or at least looked at when working on these. I don't have a die-cutter or a hot glue gun, so I just used good old scissors and thread on all of them.

  1. Yes! I vote yes for wall art - those look awesome and I want to make some for my house now - and no for your sweet baby's head. That huge flower things is something I've never understood...

  3. I love the wall art!!! I think it looks great and it has that boutique-y look to it that I think sometimes you're unsure if it's cool or not, but someone says it is so people jump on it. I'm telling you--you're gonna start a new trend! ;)

  4. I'm absolutely in love with the second one! It's amazing. I wish it was on my wall!

Also, I agree about the dahlia. I think it'd be really stunning if it was all in the same color.

  10. I've never understood the hoop wall art thing, but it is better than sticking huge flowers and/or bows on your baby's head!
    I actually like them both.

  15. I think the felt flowers make great hoop art! the second one is lovely, you should definately finish it. I like the dahlia flower very much, but I think it could use something else to balance it in the hoop, like more flowers or some embroidery. Congrats on your 200th post! :)

  18. To tell the truth, it's not something I would go for but I am quite amazed at the realistic effect you have achieved with felt! At first I thought they were sugar paste (photos are smallish on my iPad). In the end, Toni, you have to whatever you and your family like!

  19. Heck yay! These are awesome! I really love the idea of putting these on fabric and displaying them in hoops as wall art. I wonder if you could also do some embroidered flowers and leaves behind the 3-d flowers to add depth or maybe even stitch Jill's name and birthdate? You could also just leave them as is because they are so beautiful! I'd love to learn how to make these. Do you have a tutorial to recommend?
