Castle Blocks

When I saw the Super-Size Castle Block tutorial on Sew, Mama, Sew the other day I knew I had to make it. A lot of times, I pin quilt ideas and think that I want to make them in the near future, but never has one block stood out to me so much and practically screamed for me to make it.

I am a huge fan of Amy Gunson who writes at Badskirt. She is very deliberate in her fabric choices and always makes such perfect projects.  She did an excellent job on this tutorial as well. I've sewn Y-seams before but never anything to this extent and I truly enjoyed it. I know lots of people are nervous about tackling projects with Y-seams but really, once it clicks with you they are so simple.

Super-Size Castle Block 1

So far I have only made these two blocks but I intend to make many more! I haven't added the corner triangles to these because I just can't decide what I want to do there yet. Maybe some type of Essex linen or one of those new Mochi Dots?

What are you working on today?

  1. These look great, I especially love the top one :o) I always think a castle block ought to be, well, castle shaped, kind of Disney style, for some reason lol

  2. They look really lovely, and way more complicated than the economy blocks that are right at my level at the moment!

  3. I love how different the two blocks are! Not up to Y seams myself yet.

  4. Toni these blocks are gorgeous! I saw them myself yet haven't tackled them - so will though after seeing yours! The fabrics are great together - not what I would typically use but I love them. Like you said yourself so purposeful so count yourself in Amy's category! Much quilting love sent all the way from Aus! K x

  5. These blocks are gorgeous! The fabrics for that first one are glorious! Not to lessen the amazing choices with the second one, but there's just something about the combo of DS, Madrona Road, and Pearl Bracelets that just sing to me. And then to have the contrast with the pindot, perfect. I think i'll be giving this block a try, thanks for the link :)

  7. They are beautiful and I agree with you, Y seams really aren't that hard and totally worth it for a block like this!

  9. These look terrific! At first I thought they were paper-pieced, so I'm glad they are 'just' y-seams! (I'm keen on those mochi dots too - on my list!)

  11. Wow! Are these machine pieced? I thought something like this would have to be English paper pieced by hand. Clever either way!
