Last Tuesday, the lovely Marci of Marci Girl Designs shared a few links to some recipes she has been craving, one of which was caramel apples. While I haven't exactly been craving them, I did think they would be fun to make with the kids.
When we were in Iowa, we stopped at the most fabulous Mennonite grocery/deli/fabric/shoe/toy store. It is called the Dutchman's Store and it is just so much fun. They have tons of products and excellent prices. For example, I got a half-bushel of local apples for $5.95. What better thing to do with all those apples than caramelize them?
I completely went the cheater route and used the little caramels from the bag. Wyatt thought he had a super important job when I dumped them out on the counter and said he was in charge of unwrapping them. Once he started bragging about it to Carson, I had two little boys working as fast as they could to get those babies unwrapped. Sibling rivalry is sometimes a useful tool.
While at the Dutchmans, I bought a package of these leafy sprinkles and decided they would be a great addition to our apples.
Dipping apples requires concentration...
The finished product. Note the impatient boy in the back.
Wyatt has been nagging asking nicely to have a picnic for the last few days, so I decided to continue the festive afternoon and let the kids eat supper outside since it is likely one of the last times we'll be able to this year. Soup and crackers on the tables outside qualifies as a picnic, right?
They hadn't even finished their soup before deciding it was too cold and they would rather eat inside. Oh well, they can't say I didn't try!
As usual, I'm linking up with Debbie at A Quilter's Table for Tuesdays at the Table.

Yummy! I love the Amish and Mennonite stores around me (Finger Lakes region of upstate NY). Mostly food related, but we have some fabulous quilt/fabric stores too. You just can beat the prices or the quality!
ReplyDeleteOh Yeah! So glad you guys worked together and made some, I love the sprinkles you added! Too fabulous! They look way prettier than when I make them!
ReplyDeleteWell the initial child labour looked like a good idea. As for the picnic, I believe they say 'never work with children and animals' ;o)
ReplyDeleteHalf-bushel? Have I gone back to the olden days!? Looks like loads of fun though x
ReplyDeleteoh, such a great post. Your apples look yummy & I loved how your little guys were part of the process. It's a good thing!!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet! I definitely use my child labor for that kind of thing too. Those caramel apples sure look yummy! How did I miss that Debbie was doing a new link-up party?!?!?
ReplyDeleteI love this! The apples look so delicious and what a perfect activity for your boys.
ReplyDeleteMy boy would for sure love to play with this activity too!
ReplyDeleteI can just see my own boys working hard to unwrap those caramels as fast as they can - great post. :) Those apples look so good and perfect for Fall.
ReplyDeleteoh, and thanks for linking up to Tuesday at the Table!!
