What Are You Doing?

So, what's going on at your house this weekend, friends?

We've been doing a little bread making, a (very) little sewing, and a little bit of cleaning all while blatantly ignoring the three baskets of dirty clothes that need taken out to the laundry room and sorted.

I am also trying to get caught up on emails and blog reading. For some reason, 2 out of 3 of my kids have decided that there is no need to sleep past 5:00 AM, so my usual blogging/commenting during their naptime has been replaced by my own naps when possible.
I also haven't been a very good about obeying the "mouthy" part of my Mouthy Stitchers swap, so I've been trying to pop over to the Flickr group and share my two cents. Did I ever show you my mosaic for that one?

If you click on the picture it will take you to my photostream where you can see the details.
Our bathrooms are very nearly complete now, just a final sanding then we can prime and paint. Guess that means I need to figure out what colors to paint them, huh?

On a completely unrelated note, who here has a serger?? I got one for Christmas and have yet to use it. I told myself that I had to finish a few projects before I started play with it. I was supposed to go for my first lesson on it Thursday, but the weather was really bad and I didn't want to drive the 1.5 hours up there, so I rescheduled for a couple weeks from now. It really isn't as intimidating as I thought it might be, from the mini lesson I was given at the store, but now that I have it here, I'm having a bit of serger-block. Do you find that you use it more than you thought, or less? I'm excited to try a bit more garment sewing with it and a few other projects in mind.

So, that's what is going on around here. What about where you are?

  1. Sorry, no experience with a serger....Just an assortment of chores here today & maybe even a family movie later today....and we're on snow-watch!

  2. Hi Toni - will no doubt see you around Flickr then in that mouthy swap!

I am trying to FMQ a baby quilt - so far so good and the best thing is I get to enter Rhonda's prize giveaway when I finish it as part of her Finishalong! A quilt finished and a chance to win a prize - can it get better than that?

No idea about a serger sorry!

  3. I have a serger and I NEVER use it. I had to have it and Chris bought it for me and I never could get the tension right so I put it in the cabinet. I keep saying I'm going to get it out and devote a day/week to learning to use it, but there are so many projects out there I'd just rather do. I'd planned to use it for garment sewing, but so far, I just use the overlock stitch on my regular machine instead. Maybe you can inspire me to bust it out and get unafraid of using it. :-)

  4. I spent two hours straight on flickr this morning...( i didn't realise) looking though all the Mouthy Swap mosaics.....Sewing machine still hasn't come out from the cupboard since Christmas. Oh I have also had a cleanout of my fabric and re arranged all my fabric into colours and flicked through some mags for a new designs for my two bathrooms. Oh and a cuppa thrown in every now and again. Tonight I hope to do some sewing....

  6. I bought a serger secondhand more than 2 years ago and have never used it. I am taking a cathedral window quilt class Thursday and mention to my shop that I would love a learn to use your serger class. Thanks for the brilliant idea!

  7. No serger here either. I figure sergers are mainly for garment sewing and I have no interest in that. Maybe I'm wrong? Would there be a use for sergers in quilting? I think not.

We had a soccer game this morning, just had lunch, my husband went out to take the Christmas lights down, oldest son is playing lego, youngest son is playing hockey outside on the road, and I should be doing something too! What I intend to do is go through the kitchen cupboards and purge stuff. I'm sure there are things in there that we haven't used since living in this house.

  9. Our weekend involved a big clear out of DD's former bedroom closet (now my sewing room) on Saturday, an attempt to use the quilting frame (I'll post about that) and hopefully some sewing on Sunday!

  10. I got a serger for Christmas a year ago & I love it! I do quite a bit of garment sewing & love the finihed seams on woven fabrics! But what I really love is using it on knits-I'd never been thrilled sewing knits by machine, but the serger handles them beautifully. And rolled hems are terrific, too.

Be sure you take the lesson & like someone mentioned, learn about tension. It really isn't scary & is easy to adjust-you just need to kow what you're looking at.

    Have fun!

  11. I haven't used a serger and am waiting until I have a block of time learn before I buy one. I hope you share your experience with us!

I spent the day watching football and doing homework. Pretty uneventful, but that's ok.

Have a great rest of your weekend!

  12. I have had a serger for about 5 years now, and unfortunately use it way less than I thought I would. At the time I bought it, I had garment making on the brain, and it is wonderful for that, but since I haven't sewn clothes much lately, it just sits there gathering dust. Once you understand how to use it, it is super easy to use though.....

  14. I was at mum and dad's for my dad's 60th birthday and aunt's 69th birthday - a very loud, large family gathering o.O

I have a Brother 1034, it can do all sorts of cool things, and I've never had a lesson, I just chuck things at it ;o)

  15. My Mom gave me her old serger when she bought a new one, at least three or four years ago, but I've never used it. Mostly because I've no idea what I'd do with it, or how to use it, and really don't need another excuse for buying more fabric. It makes a great shelf decoration, though :)
