WIP Wednesday, vol 16

Well, it is an unofficial WIP Wednesday as Lee is taking a well-deserved holiday break. But, I actually have some works in progress, so I thought I would share.

First up, I've gotten a quarter of the blocks made for my Road to Tennessee quilt.

I'm having a hard time deciding which way to position the blocks. I think the top to rows are the more traditional way, but I kind of like the way the bottom rows are, maybe even have that zigzag type design going vertically down the quilt instead of horizontally. Maybe with a little sashing? Not sure I'm that ambitious... Suggestions?

Here's a little sneak at the next pillow that I'm working on. I've got all the dresden pieces made but I'm still indecisive on the rest of the design. I've never made a dresden before, but have been wanting to try them, especially after seeing the cute ones made by Alli and Amy

I need to make a baby gift for some friends of ours. They are having a boy and I think this fabric is perfect for him, but I'm having a hard time deciding on coordinating fabrics. This is the only fabric from that line that I have and I'm trying to work from my stash, so I keep pulling groups of fabric out then putting them aside for others. Needless to say I am making a mess and not much progress. I may even decide to just make bibs and burp cloths or something like that instead of a quilt. The baby will likely be here in two weeks or less, so I need to get on this!

What are you working on?

  1. Why not just back the truck fabric with yellow chenille, and make a matching bib/burp cloth. Easy, nice and soft for baby and makes a great stroller/car seat blankie. Nice wip's too!

  2. I LOVE the look of the tenn quilt with hometown, nice choice.. hmm, the firetrucks are so cute, maybe some large fussy cuts and pull the solids for log cabins? - id recommend a puff quilt but the scale might be a bit too large..

  3. The tennessee quilt is coming along nicely. It suits Hometown so well. I personally like the traditional layout but I can see that this is one of those blocks that has endless possibilities!

  4. Love that 'boy' fabric - how about just mixing it with solids....and RE: your hometown...I love the top 'traditional' version, but the 'zig zag' is nice too, tho I vote for no sashing.

  5. I've just been discussing tennessee with Bea (http://beaquilter.blogspot.com/) and she suggested to me that I try horizontal sashing between the rows. I think that could look nice.

Definitely a cute boy fabric. I immediately thought solids too... some to match and then maybe a dark blue to contrast.

  6. Hometown is one of my favorite collection and I think I like your setting's first row as it looks so "architectural". I once made a quilt out of these blocks, with a centered setting, but like yours better.

  7. I think that truck fabric is cute! Why not make it into a centre panel - then all you have do is make a border and you're done!

I completed a top and basted a quilt yesterday; and have five strips of sashing to complete a second top! Very productive this week!

  8. I still have 4 fabrics from that same line left over from making grandson stuff. If you need me to send you some scraps, I can put it in the mail today. Could get to you by Saturday. Just let me know.

  9. I love the more trad version too but go with your heart! Good luck with the Dresdens and I love your boy quilt fabric - I do find boy quilts the hardest to make though.

  10. Hmm, I like the ide of the zig zags both vertically an horizontally (although can I say, this has elicited more than a few strange looks from my surrounding colleagues as I turned my head sideways to try and work this out ;o) )

Looking forward to seeing your dresdens, however they may turn out!

As for the trucks, they're a lot bigger than I'd imagined that line to be, somehow, so I'm not really feeling it as a quilt (cut up that is) Maybe a car seat cover?

  11. I like the vertical zig zag ideal for the Tennessee quilt, but I am also a fan of the traditional version. I think I would include sashing if I went with the zig zag version, but I would have to see the layout both ways to decide.

I like the idea about fussy cutting the trucks and making log cabins out of it with solids.

  12. I'll be starting a quilt like this sometime soon. I might try it the traditional way then the way you have it on the bottom row and alternate between the two, but on the same row. Know what I mean? A B A B A

  13. I love your Road quilt so far! Both layouts are neat; though I like the zig zag a little bit more. I feel like it looks a little more modern. :)

Your dresden so far is cute! I'd have a hard time finding coordinates for that truck fabric, too. Good luck!

  14. Love both arrangements of your RtT blocks! How about strips (width of the quilt) of the fire engines with strips of solids in between?

  15. Oh I love the Hometown so far - and the pooches & pick ups are great - I reckon solids have to be the way to go too x

  16. either way your road to tennessee quilt looks great. The zig zag is a bit more contemporary :)
